Singular We Manifesto
As singular “you” is ubiquitous since 1700, and singular “they” is emerging since 2000,
To promote inclusion, progress, and language symmetry,
Hereby we proclaim “we” as the only suitable first-person pronounRationale:
- We should emancipate the usage of singular “we” from the 0.00001% of oppressing royalty and clergy, as well as from the caste of academic writers.
- Singular “we” is more inclusive and friendly for those of us with non-singular personality.
- Many languages outside the Western culture don’t have explicit distinction between singular and plural or have the concept of clusivity, so having a single pronoun is culturally neutral.
- To avoid confusion, we should adopt the existing constructions, such as “we all”, “weese”, and “we guys”.
